The Gen 4 data can take longer to process into SMS. This is due to the data being more dense. It is logging 5 points per second instead of 1 point per second.

Use the process below to read Gen 4 data into SMS

  1. Use the manually select one or more files as a file selection/search method.
  2. Open the folders until you find the .jdl file. Select that file.
  3. Select start processing selected files. Depending on the amount of data, the software can take a few hours to process the data. If you leave your computer unattended while the data is processing, make sure to change the computer settings in the control panel to never fall asleep.

Common causes for error messages when reading in John Deere data:

  • No global.ver file inside the folder structure of the GreenStar 2 or 3 folders. The global.ver file is removed from the folder structure if the data has been read into Apex or MyJohnDeere. Refer to the file path of the display to determine where this file should be located within the folder structure. See
  • The file path hierarchy must be in the exact order as the display created it on the card for the data to successfully be read or imported into SMS.  If selecting to automatically search a folder, the user must select the RCD folder for GreenStar 2 data, and the GS3_2630 folder for GreenStar 3 data.  Take special note of the Gen 4, GreenStar 3 and GreenStar 2 folder structures.  If it is not in the exact same format as listed above, the import will fail.

Exporting / Device Setup

  • When exporting to a GS3 display the profile name folder will be the same as the device setup configuration name.
  • GreenStar displays need planting prescriptions to have units in sds/acre.  Exporting planting prescriptions through the Device Setup Utility will convert from ksds/ac to sds/ac automatically. If exporting as a .shp file the target rate unit needs to be in sds/ac for it to work correctly in GreenStar displays.  In Shape Export Settings the units can be set to sds/ac.
  • Things to note when using the device setup to export:
    • Grower/Farm/Field names cannot contain special characters. You can edit the names by right-clicking on them and then clicking on edit item, or go to tools and click on management item editor. Prescriptions will not import into a Gen 4 display with apostrophes.
    • There cannot be any duplicate management items ( ex. Grower/Farm/Fields). To check if you have any duplicate management items go to tools and click on management item editor. Click on the Grower tab. If something says “unused” then delete it. Do the same in the Farm and Field tab.
    • If exporting to a GS2 the combination of any Grower, Farm, and field name must be 20 characters or less, total. Example: Grower- Hendersons / Farm – Home / Field – Tagues. The total character count after adding the Hendersons, Home and Tagues names together is 20. This means the names will successfully export.
    •  Product Setup for Grain (Corn, Beans, Wheat, etc) needs to have Product Group: Grain; Product Usage: Seed; Product Form: Seed; Crop Type: select the appropriate type, i.e. Corn, Soybeans, Wheat.  Do not use “Other.”   May need to add in the Manufacturer in v14.0 to the newer firmware.

  • If exporting to GS2 format and there is an existing RCD folder on the card, the newly exported data will simply be added to the existing RCD folder.  If exporting to GS3 format and there is an existing GS3_2630 folder on the usb drive, the name of the device setup configuration being exported will be added as a new profile in the GS3_2630 folder.
